First born in a rapid sequence of 4 daughters, followed by one last failed effort at conceiving a boy-child five years later. Dad was a gravel-trucker, mom cooked for the crusher crew for the first 6 years of my life. Through this time I enjoyed the total freedom of having the whole natural out-doors in which to play at will. Mom was kept busy from dawn til dusk cooking and cleaning up for 3 shifts for each meal as she had only a 2-burner hot-plate, no running water, and no refridgerator. She scrubbed clothes on the rocks or in a wash-tub on a board and hung things to dry wherever handy. There was precious little time for coddling kids. Therefore, since my very favorite toys were real live baby-dolls, I became "The Little Mother".
